The date of 14 April 2024 will see the third editions of the X-BIONIC LAKE GARDA 42 marathon and half marathon take place, the races that wind their way along the northern shores of Lake Garda, where the water’s edge kisses the feet of the mountains extending across Lombardy, Trentino and Veneto. Runners from all over the world are expected to participate, many of whom will be women. Indeed, the half marathon is the only race in Italy where the number of women taking part outnumbers the men. 

The X-BIONIC LAKE GARDA 42 marathon and half marathon are now in their third year and have established themselves among the foremost sporting events to take place on Lake Garda. An unparalleled experience in a unique setting awaits the runners, with a route that’s entirely closed to traffic and which, for the most part, runs alongside the water’s edge to offer a stunning lake view as it passes through each of the regions that enclose its shores: Lombardy, Trentino and Veneto. The marathon runners will set off from the lakefront in Limone sul Garda, a village in the province of Brescia renowned for its ancient lemon houses, before running along the famous cycle-pedestrian path that’s suspended above the lake. From here, they’ll pass through Trentino, specifically through Riva del Garda and Arco di Trento with their views across to the Brenta Dolomites, before reaching the finish line in the medieval village of Malcesine, in the province of Verona.  

A truly breathtaking route that’s also very popular with runners from abroad. In 2023, 2,700 athletes competed, representing 62 different nationalities from across all five continents. The total participation from foreign athletes was an incredible 66%, with significant representations from Germany and Austria, nations whose citizens have been flocking to these shores since the 19th century, but also from Great Britain, the United States and many Eastern European countries. And registrations for the 2024 edition, scheduled for Sunday 14 April, have already surpassed last year's numbers. Another interesting aspect is the number of female participants: in keeping with previous editions, over 50% of the registrations for the half marathon (which starts in Arco and shares the finish line with the full marathon in Malcesine) are women.  

And let’s face it, racing in a landscape dominated by the waters of the lake and the mountains that surround it, dotted with lemon houses, lakeside harbours and towns steeped in history, is difficult for any runner to ignore, who are also drawn by the possibility of running along the magnificent cycle-pedestrian path that's suspended above the water all the way from Limone sul Garda to the border with Trentino. Moreover, with the resplendence of this landscape and Lake Garda’s warm spring climate, why come for just one day? The X-BIONIC LAKE GARDA 42 has many ancillary events and attractions going on, making it an entire fun-packed weekend of activities.  For example, for those with children in tow, LG KIDS will be taking place in Rocca di Riva del Garda on the day before the main event: a race of just over a kilometre dedicated to young runners from 5 to 12 years of age.
