nendo @ Maison & Objet (Hall 7 A214 / B213)

nendo's new tableware and accessory collections for ZENS, a lifestyle brand based in China will be shown at Maison & Objet 2018, an international interior goods/decoration trade show taking place in Paris from January 19th-23rd. Their booth (Hall 7 / Stand A214-B213) has also been designed by #nendo.

Portraying small vases and containers as "birds" and resting them on "power line" or "tree" shaped stands, animates an image of various sized birds resting their wings. The number of vases can be increased to hold more flowers and reduced when there are only a few; depending on what is on display, the vases can be added or removed. Apart from displaying flowers, the vases and containers can be used on a desk to store small items such as pens and clips, and can also hold accessories, such as necklaces or keys when hanged on the stands.

Hieroglyphics such as Chinese pictogram and Kanji characters represent relating ideas by using corresponding cores ("radicals") in a variety of words, for example " 氵" (Sanzui) represents things that are related to water or liquid, and "艹" (Kusakanmuri) represents things related to plants. In this 4-piece furniture collection this idea was used to create unity between the different objects. A triangle shaped base serves as the core, while for each piece additional shapes were added according to its function; a smooth surface is used as a table top and slightly bent surfaces is set for seating. 3 layers of surfaces will make a shelf, and those made into a circle will store small accessories such as keys and smartphones. Similar to a Kanji, where one word is a combination of multiple meanings; by arranging three-dimensional shapes in different ways, we can form a variety of furniture pieces. Also by maintaining a simple silhouette and giving it depth only by extruding it, the objects project a strong graphic expression similar to the essence of Chinese characters.

Tableware lids generally have a plain surface, so by creating three-dimensional shaped lids for this collection, they are becoming an inherent part of the overall function, appeared as if they are stones laying on top of the different cups and dishes. An iron kettle and a teapot for Chinese tea, both with a lid made of hollow silicone, perforated on one side, enable it to function as a tea strainer. By incorporating a similar lid for a glass water jug, it can be used for cold brewing tea. The lids are made of silicone; they have very low thermal conductivity, and also prevent unpleasant "clatter" sounds when placed on a table. Similar #stone designs were also incorporated in square, round and long plates. The square and long plates appear to have partially sunken expressions depending on the weight of the accompanying #stone. These stones may also function as small pots and can be used as sauce dishes. The #stone in the round plate is sunken into the center; sauce poured inside may cover parts of the plate emphasizing the #stone by making it seems as if it is floating in the middle. The tea and coffee sets of this collection are all designed to be stackable, making it easier to carry all at once while giving the set an appearance of a pile of stones, blurring the borders between the living room and the outdoors.
