Selle Italia renews its handlebar tape line and launches the adhesive-free and reusable “smart tape”

Alongside its vast selection of saddles, #selleitalia also offers a range of handlebar tapes, each with unique features. The company gives its existing tapes a new look and launches a new one: #smarttape, the latest addition to the Greentech family with a deeply sustainable soul.

The new Greentech Smart Tape

In 2021, #selleitalia launched the first saddle made with Greentech technology, an automated process allowing the production of high-quality, eco-friendly products. This year, #selleitalia presents its latest addition to this family with the same, low environmental impact: the new Smart Tape handlebar tape.

The tape is supplied as a single strip with incorporated cap in the same material, calling for an entirely non-traditional application process, whereby the cap needs to be applied first to tape the handlebar. The tape is made without the inner double-sided adhesive strip: the special micro “suction cup” structure compensates for the lack of glue and allows the tape to be reused once removed from the handlebar.

With a thickness of 2.5 millimetres it guarantees comfort and superior grip and saves up to 20% of the time needed to wrap the handlebars.

According to a study by the Italian startup Up2You, with which #selleitalia collaborated to examine and quantify the company's CO₂ emissions as part of its commitment to decarbonisation, the production of one #smarttape involves the emission of 0.72kg of CO₂, 24% less than a standard handlebar tape produced outside the European Union.

A new look for SG-Tape and Granfondo Tape

In the accessories line, two new handlebar tapes will be revealed: SG-Tape and Granfondo Tape. Our SG-Tape will feature the new #selleitalia logo and be available not only in the collection’s existing black and white version, but also red. The Granfondo Tape will likewise feature a renewed logo and be available in three colours: black, light grey and red.

From a technical point of view, SG-Tape is made of PU (polyurethane), gel and Lycra with a high grip and excellent shock absorption, is 3 millimetres thick and ideal for damping vibrations on the roughest terrain, cobblestones or asphalt. Granfondo Tape is made of EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) with a smooth and silky texture, and is 2.5 millimetres thick; this tape can also be repositioned since the adhesive part is not too sticky.
